For the majority of the Brazilian population, former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) attempted to organize a coup to remain at the head of the Brazilian executive. This is what the Datafolha poll found, published on Friday the 29th. According to the poll, 55% of those interviewed believe that Bolsonaro acted to prevent the swearing-in of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), against 39% who believe the opposite. Another 7% say they don’t know.
The survey interviewed 2,002 people in 147 Brazilian cities on March 19 and 20. The margin of error is plus or minus two percentage points.
The Datafolha investigation comes at a time when the Federal Supreme Court (STF) is pursuing investigations against Bolsonaro. Operation Tempus Veritatis, of the Federal Police (PF), investigates an alleged attempted coup d’état and abolition of the democratic rule of law by the former president and his allies.
The survey also consulted those who voted for Bolsonaro and Lula in the second round and those who have more affinity with Lulism and Bolsonarismo to find out what the groups think.
There is great disbelief towards the hypothesis of a coup d’état on the part of those who align themselves or identify with Bolsonaro: 73% of those who voted for the PL candidate in 2022 say that he did not try to remain president planning a coup. The percentage reaches 75% in the case of the Bolsonarists. For both groups, 19% think the opposite.
On the opposite front, the scenario is different: 87% of those who voted for Lula believe in the coup plan of the then PL candidate. The number fluctuates one percentage point lower for PT members (86%). Non-believers in the two groups represent 19% and 11% of the sample.
