The Shrek franchise: from best to worst, according to critics

The “Shrek” film series is one of the most successful both commercially and critically. Currently, “Shrek” is the 18th-highest-grossing film franchise of all time and the second-highest-grossing animated franchise, behind only the “Despicable Me” series.

In addition to financial success, some films in the series have also received praise from specialized critics and have obtained awards and nominations, including an Oscar. However, despite the financial returns and awards, it is undeniable that the Shrek franchise has had a huge cultural impact since its first film.

We have therefore decided to list all the films in the series, including the 4 films of the main saga and the two spin-offs, from worst to best according to specialized critics. As a criterion we used the scores attributed to films by the main film review aggregators and cinema-focused websites.

Shrek: what is the best film of the saga?

The third film in the “Shrek” series is the one with the worst critical performance. The film received mixed reviews overall, but was a box office success. “Shrek the Third” is the fourth highest-grossing film of 2007.

Until then, the last film in the main series, “Shrek Forever After,” had had an average critical performance. However, the film was also a financial success, being the fifth highest-grossing film of 2010.

The first spin-off of the “Shrek” series, “Puss in Boots,” stars the character from whom the film takes its name, in an adventure whose events took place before his first appearance in “Shrek 2”.

A box office success, the film received mostly positive reviews even from specialized media. Additionally, the film was nominated for Best Animated Film at the 84th Academy Awards.

Extremely commercially successful, “Shrek 2” boasts impressive branding. It is the highest-grossing film of 2004, surpassing other giants such as “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”, “Spider-Man 2” and “The Incredibles”. The film is also the highest-grossing film in DreamWorks history to date.

Furthermore, the film received acclaim from specialized critics. The work received two nominations at the 77th Academy Awards, in the categories Best Animated Film and Best Original Song.

Second spin-off of the “Shrek” series and second film starring the popular character Puss in Boots, “The Last Order” received fervent praise from critics and the public.

In addition to its enormous commercial success (the tenth highest-grossing film in 2022), the work was critically acclaimed. The film received nominations for numerous awards, including Best Animated Feature at the 95th Academy Awards.

The first film in the “Shrek” series is a cultural milestone. In 2020, the National Film Registry, a program of the United States Library of Congress that preserves culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant films for posterity, placed this film for preservation. It is the first animated film of the 21st century to be preserved.

One of the most influential animated films in history, “Shrek” was widely acclaimed by critics. At the 74th Academy Awards, the work won the first Oscar for best animated film. Additionally, the film also received a nomination in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.

Beyond that, the film was a resounding commercial success, being the fourth highest-grossing film of 2001.
