It was made by Monolith Productions and was known as Project Apollo
Images and videos from the Batman game that eventually evolved into Middle-earth: Shadows of Mordor emerged this Thursday (4).
Developer Monolith Productions was working on the game with the hopes of releasing it alongside Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight films, but it was reportedly scrapped in part because the film’s director wasn’t on board with the idea.
Known as Project Apollo, the game would have several stealth and combat mechanics inspired by the Arkham games, as well as open-world technology and the basis of what would later become the Shadow of Mordor Nemesis system.
Images and videos of the canceled match were made available on social media (via Eurogamer), in which we can see what the graphics and gameplay were like at the time of cancellation.

According to what was reported by SpideyRanger, responsible for the dissemination of the material, “Warner Bros. didn’t think having two Batman franchises was a great idea, so the Batman game was reworked into a Lord of the Rings project and that’s how we got ‘Shadow of Mordor’.”
Monolith is currently working on another DC franchise, developing the Wonder Woman game announced during The Game Awards 2021.
