Vietnam bans Netflix from advertising and distributing games; understand

Vietnam ordered, this Wednesday (10), that Netflix stop advertising and distributing its games in the country until April 25th. According to information from Reuters, the authorities’ decision is due to the fact that the platform does not yet have the necessary license to operate gaming services in the territory.

Vietnam requires Netflix to comply with Vietnamese regulations on online gaming services. We order him to stop advertising and publishing his video games on the Netflix app, Appstore Vietnam and Google Play Store Vietnam before April 25th.

Called Netflix Games, Netflix game streaming has seen continuous growth since its launch. While still small, user engagement with the platform tripled in 2023, according to data published in the company’s earnings report in January of this year.

Part of this happened after the platform made the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) trilogy available on the service. The company said at the time that the game became its “most successful launch”, with some customers signing up just to play GTA.

Netflix Games currently offers unlimited access to over 40 mobile-exclusive games, including Exploding Kittens, Stranger Things: 1984, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge.

The platform also includes games based on its popular original shows such as Theft of money AND The Dragon Prince.
