The Costa Rican is looking for space in Brazilian football for the blind

“It turned into a game of chess” is a jargon often used when wanting to highlight the tactical details used by coaches. In the case of Angel Flores, 22 years old, Acergs-RS striker, the sentence makes perfect sense. Born in Costa Rica, he was already a national chess champion for the blind and came to Brazil for the third consecutive time to play football for the blind. In the South-Southeast Regional, which takes place in the city of Cachoeirinha (RS), he uses the tactical, technical and even physical teachings of the board on the pitch. “There is a controversy regarding chess, whether it is a sport or not. Well, for me yes, because, just like in football, you have to have great physical skills to keep the brain active. There is also the strategy, the tactics “And technique, just like in football. In chess you have to know how to move the pieces. Just as on the pitch you need to know how to move well with your teammates. So there is this relationship between the two modalities,” Angelo explained.

Angel Flores started playing football when he was 14 years old. Two years later, he became the youngest player to score a goal in a World Cup, in 2018, in Spain. On that occasion, Brazil won its fifth championship by beating Costa Rica in the group stage 14-1. At the same time, Angel’s talent on the bench attracted attention with the national title won in 2021.

Realized dream

In 2022, he also became the first Costa Rican to leave his country to defend a blind football team internationally. Angel Flores came to Brazil to wear the Asdefipel-RS shirt. The following year he moved to Acergs, with which he ranked fourth in Serie A and second as the competition’s top scorer, with four goals. “I wrote letters in which I wrote down plans for my future. And I always wrote that I wanted to play in Brazil, where there is the best football league for the blind. The level that the players have here is incredible, it’s very high, a another level,” he praised .

In this edition of the South-South-East Regional, his team’s championship ended up fluctuating a lot. Acergs is therefore out of the semi-finals, even if there is still one round of the qualifying phase to go, this Thursday (11th). So far, Angel has scored two goals in the competition. The goals came in the victory against Asdefipel.

However, he suffered a cut to his eyebrow during the 1-0 defeat against Unicep-ES and on Wednesday he played with the flu in the defeat against INV-SP with the same score. With this, he now lives with the expectation of another participation in the Série A, in October, in Sao Paulo.

A place in the semi-finals

The third round of the South-South-East Regional defined the two teams classified in group B. Unicep and INV confirmed their place in the semi-finals, but it remains to be seen who will be the leader after Thursday’s matches (11). In group A Agafuc-RS secured their place after beating Sasjo-RJ 4-0. Fourth place will be played out between Maestro-PR and Apadv-SP, who will face each other directly in the last round.
