Hollywood was shocked on August 28, 2020 when it learned of the death of Chadwick Boseman, the famous actor and one of the faces of Marvel for several years with the Black Panther. His death was all the more unexpected because he had never been able to prevent colon cancer from developing.

A few months later, Boseman was set to reprise his role as T’Challa in Black Panther 2, which was currently being written. But this dramatic event put the project on hold while it took time to decide on a new strategy.

“Making Black Panther 2 without that particular person who was the foundation of that movie is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life.” After that, its director Ryan Coogler said.

A history of inheritance

The teams had three choices: remake Chadwick Boseman, use digital effects, or simply continue the story without him. It was ultimately the latter strategy that they retained when writing Black Panther 2.

Screenwriters quickly came up with a leitmotif: how to deal with grief and overcome loss? “In order for Wakanda’s story to continue in a world where T’Challa no longer exists, it seemed logical to understand what that loss means to those around him. And the one who feels it the most is his little sister, Shuria.” Producer Nate Moore recalls.

The opening scene shows the latter – played by Letitia Wright – trying to save her brother from a sudden illness. Faced with failure, a young woman refuses to take the seat vacated by the king of Wakanda. But various events push him to reveal himself.

In this second opus, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri, M’Baku, Okoye and the Dora Milaje fight to protect their nation from the intervention of other world powers after the death of T’Challa.

As the people struggle to move forward, our heroes must band together and count on the help of mercenaries Nakia and Everett Ross to usher the kingdom of Wakanda into a new era. But a terrible threat arises from a kingdom hidden in the oceans: Talokan.

Farewell to the king

Boseman’s former partners took advantage of this film to say goodbye to him. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is really T’Challa’s funeral. A sequence of incredible beauty dedicated to African traditions, which did not delay the audience.

The feature film attracted almost 3.8 million viewers in French cinemas, a huge success and the best tribute to this actor who left too soon.
