Robert Downey Jr. is already making a comeback thanks to his Best Supporting Actor Oscar win (Oppenheimer for the film) just a few weeks ago. Not on film, but on television, as the latter appears in the credits of the event’s miniseries The Sympathizer.
Four Robert Downey Jr. for the price of one!
This spy series, adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen, is set in the 1970s, at the end of the Vietnam War. A Franco-Vietnamese spy exiled to the United States finds himself in the past of a communist agent and begins to lead a double life in both camps.
In the mini-series co-created by Park Chan-wook (The Old Boy), Robert Downey Jr. plays four different characters, each representing a different aspect of the American establishment: a CIA agent, a professor, an elected representative of America. Congress and Director. A true chameleon actor, so the latter was the perfect choice to do this type of quadruple act!
A24 Studio is in production
The main role of the program – the protagonist, whose name we do not know – is played by Hoa Juande. Little known to the general public, this Australian actor of Vietnamese descent notably appeared in the Netflix series Cowboy Bebop, as well as the second season of the anthology Top of the Lake.
Note that the miniseries is produced by A24, the company behind major films like Everything Everywhere at Once, Midsommar and The Iron Claw. This partnership with American cable channel HBO marks the association of two giants of American independent film and television.
A haunting tale of pretensions and unexpected plot twists, the spy mini-series The Sympathizer can be seen every week starting this Monday, April 15 on Prime Video with a paid subscription to Warner Pass.
