Bastard on Netflix: Adaptation Finally Rises to Myth for Dark Fantasy Manga?

The 90s manga juggernaut is coming to an animated series on Netflix. The platform will indeed release the first thirteen episodes of the Bastard anime this Thursday, June 30th!! Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy, manga adaptation of the same by Kazushi Hagiwara (27 volumes, available from Glénat Publications).

In publication in Japan since 1988 (manga publication still takes regular breaks, no volumes since 2012!), BASTARD!! is a dark fantasy series that follows the adventures of Tia Not Yoko, the daughter of a great wizard, whose powers allow her to resurrect the demonic wizard Dark Schneider, an unlikely ally in their war against evil wizards.

Often compared to Huge Berserk for its darkness and its themes (although it is clearly more brilliant than the work of the late Kentaro Miura), Bastard!! It was already the subject of the first adaptation in the early 90s, in the form of six OAVs (episodes intended exclusively for the video market). Fairly faithful and of good quality, this adaptation obviously couldn’t adapt the entire manga at the time.

That’s why Bastard returns as a series this time!! Produced by studio Liden Films (Tokyo Revengers), the anime is also directed by Takaharu Ozaki, who is far from new to dark fantasy as he was already employed on the animated adaptation of Goblin Slayer. Here is a new adaptation of the manga faithful and generally uncensored, offered by Netflix.

Because of its extreme darkness and bloody murders, Bastard!! Clearly not a series suitable for large audiences; Therefore, its viewing is exclusively reserved for mature audiences, both for the brutality of its images (but also for numerous scenes of nudity), and for the topics discussed. So you better have a strong heart before you start watching this new Netflix series!
