Centenarians: USP reveals the secrets of healthy seniors

A USP study began during the pandemic to understand how centenarians survived Covid-19 and continues today. The idea is to reveal the genetics of these elderly people

How to be a healthy centenarian? This is the question driving a USP study that seeks to reveal the secret of people who manage to stay healthy even when they are over 100 years old. The analysis began during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the goal of understanding how these older adults were exposed to the virus and remained asymptomatic.

Initially, the aim was to verify whether there was a genetic component capable of protecting this population from developing the severe form of the disease. Among the volunteers there were 20 centenarians, three of them were over 110 years old.

The study is far from finished, but it now brings together data from 40 centenarians from different regions of the country who donated genetic material to USP’s Center for Human Genome and Stem Cell Studies.

Two of them died shortly after providing the material, but this did not affect the analysis.

“We know that healthy aging depends 80% on the environment and 20% on genetics. However, as people age, genetics begins to play an increasingly important role”, defended the director of CEGH- CEL Mayana Zatz, at the time of the study.

The secret of longevity

The aim of the research currently underway is to identify which genetic variants are responsible for longevity, what these variants produce, and to share these secrets with everyone.

Among the centenarians analyzed are the inhabitants of Norte Fluminense Davino Cordeiro Leodoro, Deolira Glicéria Pedro da Silva and Nora Rónai and the miners Laura de Oliveira and José Bernardo da Silva, who in an interview with The globethey justify their longevity with healthy habits.

Two of them, in fact, Nora and Laura, have the habit of swimming. Laura also competed and was the record holder in the centenarian category.

Little by little, science wants to understand how some centenarians manage to be so lucid and healthy. A study of GeroScience arrived at collect the blood of centenarians to reveal longevity, and they also discovered some important biomarkers, such as cholesterol and glucose levels.

For now, what we know is that some habits can improve yours Life expectation, how to eat healthy and sleep well; practice regular physical exercise, learn to control stress, reduce alcohol consumption, avoid smoking, have good social relationships and not use opioids.

The lesson that remains is that we must learn from these centenarians and embrace a healthier lifestyle, in pursuit of long-awaited longevity.
