The last time Kate Winslet collaborated with James Cameron, in a small movie about a really big ship, they made cinema history. Now they are about to change the game again, with an appropriate aquatic return: Winslet is once again working with the director on the long-awaited sequel. Avatar: The way of water. Their reunion is, in many ways, titanic news, but despite all the similarities to their latest collaboration (long production, lots of water, ridiculously epic scale), Winslet plays a very different character than Lovesick Rose. As seen on the cover of our new world exclusive Avatar: The way of water question, we can exclusively reveal that Winslet’s character is the warrior Na’vi Ronal (pronounced “Ro-nail”). Together with Cliff Curtis’ Tonowari, Ronal leads the Metkayina tribe, who inhabit the shallow waters of Pandora’s vast oceans, and will play an important role in the upcoming adventure.
“She is deeply loyal and a fearless leader,” says Winslet. Empire of her big blue alien, who teases an action heroine in a mold similar to Sarah Connor, Ripley and AvatarNeytiri herself. “She is strong. A warrior. Even in the face of grave danger and with an unborn child on board, she is still alongside her people and fights for what she loves most. Her family and home.” When Sam Worthington’s Jake and Zoe Saldaña’s Neytiri are kicked out of their home and flee to Metkayina’s water world, expect friction – the drama and conflict that tends to follow the Sully clan means they will never be welcomed with open arms.
For Winslet, working with Cameron again was a big deal, even if their dynamic changed a bit in the following years. Titanic and broke box office records around the world. “Jim and I are totally different people now than we were 26 years ago,” she says. “He’s calmer and I’m definitely more hyperactive now!” One thing is certain, however: this time Winslet was one with the water, diving into the depths to shoot underwater with his now legendary freediving prowess. How long has she been submerged in one breath? “Seven minutes and 14 seconds, baby!” she says, adding that “the most amazing thing for me as a middle-aged woman was learning something not only new, but superhuman.” Get ready to return to the heart of the ocean.
