Advances in generative artificial intelligence have shocked the world in recent months. Beautiful images created by artificial intelligence and even simple videos and games have led us to the following question: how far can this technology go?
Doubt has led various sectors of civil society to mobilize in defense of their jobs too. OR In recent months, voice actors have been mobilizing to regulate this new feature. The strike of Hollywood actors and screenwriters also showed concern about the entry of artificial intelligence into the sector.
Speaking of my industry, journalists also have reason to worry: it’s very easy to teach a machine to write a lead. Of course, all this fuss around generative AI is legitimate. Because we’ve seen the amazing things OpenAI’s Sora is capable of doing.
But it is important to clarify that today Artificial Intelligence will not yet take anyone’s place. Especially because the technology is still in its infancy and is far from providing the same quality of work done by humans.
The clearest example was just released on social media by the Chinese company TCL. The company has its own streaming platform, TCLtv+, and is now creating a new segment for its productions: TCLtv+ Studios.
And the studio’s first major release is the first short film made entirely by artificial intelligence. baptized by Next stop Paristhe novel had a trailer posted on the company’s YouTube channel.
Doubtful quality
Pioneering experience
In order not to give the image of a complaining old man (which is what I am), I clarify, once again, that this is the first commercial short film made with generative Artificial Intelligence that we have heard of. In other words, the trend is that technology evolves and that, yes, one day we might have a good movie made with artificial intelligence.
And this is even more possible considering the savings that companies will have. Money will continue to dictate the rules of the game, both today and 200 years from now. And generating images by machine saves professional animators a lot of money. The same goes for voice actors and actors. And journalists. And many other professions that can be replaced by technology.
This will be a real concern in a few years and it will be up to us, human beings, to know how to reinvent ourselves. Or learn to manage these new tools. Our ancestors survived an industrial revolution. Soon it will be our turn.
But not yet. Much less at the cinema. TCL will definitely need a few years to improve Next stop Paris.
