Although he has always been a loyal servant of his country, Colonel Klaus von Stauffenberg is concerned that Hitler has plunged Germany and Europe into chaos. Realizing that time was running out, he decided to go on the offensive: in 1942, he tried to convince several senior officers of the need to overthrow Hitler.
A year later, he developed Operation Valkyrie, the goal of which was to eliminate the Führer. Although he was initially only one of many conspirators, Stauffenberg soon found himself on the front line: it was he who would have to kill Hitler…
From a solid screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie, already a screenwriter for his usual suspects, Bryan Singer delivers a thrilling, gripping and documentary film whose tragic outcome is well known, but not necessarily detailed by the general public.
That’s a credit to this rather remarkable film, which also stars an absolutely flawless Tom Cruise in the title role and is supported by a top-notch supporting cast, starting with Kenneth Branagh.
Filmed in Germany, particularly in Bandlerblok, the military headquarters where the operation was planned until it failed, the film caused real controversy there, due to the nature of the subject, apparently for fear of a badly extinguished fire. But also the fact that an actor like Tom Cruise could slip into such a role.
The actor also wanted to put aside the on-set criticism. “Everyone knew that we were making this movie out of respect for Stauffenberg’s memory, and that’s why most people showed their support for the movie. I’m really passionate about the story and I’m careful about every detail so that nothing gets distorted, nothing ‘glamorous’.”
Again, on the subject of Valkyrie, I know it’s a sensitive subject and so the approach was respectful. I know that we must be sensitive and respect the memory of those who fought against Hitler and who mostly paid with their lives.”
When Hollywood recycles history, it does it well and smartly. It is possible, and Valkyrie is a great demonstration of that. To watch or re-watch on Prime Video.
