Although in the United States it premiered in October 2023 at various festivals, in Mexico the film “Robot Dreams” did not reach theaters until March 7, 2024, before the Academy Awards, after the film was nominated.

Although the Best Animated Film category went to Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” “Robot Dreams” drew attention for its quirky character design and the endearing story it tells, which was based on an event that experienced Sara author and illustrator of the graphic novel on which the film is based.

Years ago, Sara Varon decided to capture her own experience in “Robot dreams” to overcome a loss: the death of her dog.

When his “lomito” got sick, the vet recommended that he be put down. During her grieving, she realized that it was the best thing she could do because she loved him even though she felt abandoned by him, a situation that those who have been through something similar can relate to.

Recently, this story has gained importance in social networks, especially in Facebook groups, where fans share their perspective on the film. One comment that caught the eye was from user Abel Sanchez, who shares that the film is about friendship, heartbreak and grief.

“One thing the film does very well is show the anguish you feel when you have a loved one on the verge of death. “Knowing that he’s still here, but not for long, feeling powerless and guilty that I couldn’t save him, waiting for a miracle, harboring this naive hope that everything will be like before,” she wrote.

‘Robot Dreams’ and its beautiful message of healing

Pablo Berger, the film’s director, was visiting Mexico City, where he had the opportunity to talk about this story with the press.

The director emphasizes that “Robot Dreams” is a metaphor for how life forces us to move forward. Although we look back, the nature of life forces us to step back and move forward, inviting the audience to reflect on deep themes such as loss, loneliness and resilience.

“I fell in love with the story in 2010, but I didn’t know I was going to make a film until I reconnected with it eight years later. I was extremely moved by her deep themes of loss, friendships, memory, emotion. forward, mourning,” Pablo Berger told the newspaper Milenio.

Having experienced many losses of loved ones, such as the death of his mother and a close friend, the Spanish director found in this story a way to heal those wounds.

“Making this film was very therapeutic, and I think memory is the perfect balm for healing,” he explained.
