US President Joe Biden will sign a bill on Wednesday providing billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine for its war against Russia, a victory for the president as he seeks re-election and a boost for allies who have sought the Washington’s support for Kiev.
Biden, who will face former Republican President Donald Trump in November’s presidential election, has been pressing lawmakers for six months to approve more resources for Ukraine, which has been fighting a full-scale Russian invasion for more than two years.
Despite bipartisan support, the proposed relief package has stalled due to opposition in the House of Representatives, primarily from Republicans linked to Trump.
The impasse ended when the Republican-led House abruptly changed course and passed four bills on Saturday that include funding for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and other U.S. partners in the Indo-Pacific.
Biden and Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson had intense discussions on Ukraine in February, and the president implored Republicans to support the package and chastised them for not doing so.
Johnson, who faces calls from some hardline Republicans to remove him over his change of course on aid, met with Trump in Florida this month; the former president said Johnson was “doing a great job.”
The Senate followed the House’s lead Tuesday night, passing a sweeping bill providing $61 billion in aid to Ukraine, which has suffered a series of military setbacks that allies blame on delay in obtaining additional funding from the United States.
“Congress passed my legislation to strengthen our national security and send a message to the world about the power of American leadership: We resolutely defend democracy and freedom, and we stand against tyranny and oppression,” Biden said in a statement after the vote in the Senate. .
He said he will sign the bill this Wednesday.
