Saved from cancellation, Magnum gets a few more seasons

It’s official: Magnum PI will be getting a 5th and 6th season. DeadlineThe Jay Hernandez-helmed detective series was rescued by NBC after it was canceled by CBS at the end of its 4 seasons last May.

Thus, the American channel ordered 20 new episodes of the reboot, which will be divided into 2 seasons, bringing the series to 96 episodes, with the possibility of receiving additional seasons if successful.

In anticipation of Magnum’s cancellation, CBS Studios, which co-produces the series with Universal TV, did not renew the cast’s contracts, which expired on Thursday, June 30. With the deal now in place, the cast will now be able to close negotiations to return for those two additional seasons.

Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang and Amy Hill, who star alongside Jay Hernandez, are expected to return, as are showrunner Eric Guggenheim and producers Justin Lin, John Davis and John Fox. Magnum will remain a Universal TV and CBS Studios co-production.

Weeks after CBS’s surprise announcement to cancel Magnum , Universal Television has begun exploring the possibility of breathing new life into the new channel’s drama series.

NBC and USA Network very quickly emerged as serious contenders for the takeover, cutting production costs. As co-producers, Universal TV and CBS Studios shared the rights, with Universal TV handling international sales and CBS in the US.

Magnum PI is one of Universal Television’s flagship dramas, with its reboot ranking among the studio’s top 25 most-watched shows. That’s why the announcement of its cancellation last May came as a surprise, with the series still averaging 7.4 million viewers.

With this survival, Magnum PI follows in the footsteps of another Universal TV series, Brooklyn Nine-Nine , which was also picked up by NBC after its cancellation by Fox after five seasons. The detective comedy thus received 3 additional seasons.

In France, the fourth season of Magnum is still unreleased on TF1.
