who is he with

is it worth watching

Dead Boy Detectives is a project that has been mistreated. The series was originally slated for HBO Max (Warner’s platform) as a spin-off of Doom Patrol. It is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s comic book that introduced the two characters in Sandman.

But changes at the helm of DC Studios, now led by Peter Safran and James Gunn, have affected some productions. Their strategy led to some radical decisions when the project no longer fit into their new editorial line. In the case of Dead Boy Detectives, the series ended on Netflix. It’s a logical choice when we know that the American giant already offers Sandman in its catalog.

This fantasy series is a more teenage and fun take on Neil Gaiman’s fantasy world. While there’s plenty of horror left – with just the right amount of violence and jumps in certain episodes – Dead Boy Detectives isn’t aimed at the same audience as Sandman, which is restricted to under-18s. But the two plays have in common the idea of being decidedly weird, just as their creator wants them to be.

The strength of this new Netflix production is its character writing: from the friendly and emotional relationship between Charles and Edwin, from cute kawaii fan Nico (Yuyu Kitamura) through Jenny (Briana Cuoco, Kelly’s sister!), the butcher. The town where our characters live throughout Season 1, we quickly join this motley crew as they solve one crime after another. And the British aspect of the series adds an undeniable charm to the whole thing (their accent…).

The procedural aspect of the series—the investigation in each episode—is an excuse to flesh out the characters, explain the universe, and develop implications related to the Sandman universe (the two series also share a protagonist).

If we’ve had a hard time avoiding soft stomachs in the middle of the season, the final episode will make us find as quickly as possible these two detectives like no other, who still have a lot to learn.

Dead Boy Detectives8 episodes to watch on Netflix.
