Social-emotional skills directly influence student performance, study reveals

The Ayrton Senna Institute released on Friday the 26th the results of a study carried out in collaboration with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which saw the participation of Brazil for the first time. Research has revealed that social-emotional skills have a direct impact not only on students’ academic performance, but also on their psychological well-being, influencing both academic and personal progress.

In total, 15 social-emotional skills and their relevance in students’ lives were assessed, as well as analyzing the factors that promote or hinder their development.

In Brazil, the survey was conducted in the city of Sobral, Ceará, in 2023. In total, there were more than 4,500 participants, including students aged 10 to 15, teachers, school leaders and parents/guardians . In the 10 year age group, 2,208 students, 219 teachers, 55 principals and 1,032 parents or guardians participated. Among 15-year-old students, 2,343 participated: 287 teachers, 25 principals and 989 parents or guardians. In addition to Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Italy, Japan, Finland and Bulgaria participated in the research.
