From The Sixth Sense to Signs to The Village or The Visit, acclaimed director M. Night Shyamalan has continued to ensnare audiences throughout his filmography. A true specialist in dramatic moves and a master of the fine art ironyThe filmmaker (whose upcoming feature is also titled The Trap ) put on possibly the most sophisticated collar of his career in 2016.
Indeed, as recently recalled Article from ColliderAnd as Shyamalan himself said in 2021 on the microphone CinemaBlendHe went so far as to trap every Universal Studios executive before the release of Split.
Shyamalan’s biggest trap
Directed by James McAvoy, this new fantasy thriller follows Philadelphia zookeeper Kevin Wendell Crumb, who suffers from particularly severe dissociative identity disorder and has already developed 23 distinct personalities.
But what everyone (besides Shyamalan himself, of course) didn’t know during the film’s production was that Split was actually a stealth sequel to Unbreakable , one of the director’s first films starring Bruce Willis, who was awarded the Superhuman by physical resistance.
This connection between the two feature films (which later spawned a third film, Glass), Shyamalan was careful not to reveal to the audience (who discovered a surprise in theaters, the anthology’s post-credits scene), but. .. to the leaders of Universal themselves!
One last anthology scene
So the director filmed the final scene of Split – in which we see Bruce Willis’ character looking at a news bulletin announcing Kevin Crumb’s escape – behind the scenes of the studio. But he first took care to seek permission from Disney (whose subsidiary Touchstone Pictures released Unbreakable at the time) and was thus able to trap Universal’s salesmen on the day of the show:
I went to see the president of Universal Studios, the marketing team, they were all in the screening room.Shyamalan told CinemaBlend.
“They didn’t know what ending they were going to see.”
“We dimmed the lights and showed Split, they didn’t know what ending they were going to see, they didn’t even know I filmed it because I didn’t even send the footage of that scene. The light went out, they looked at the whole Split, they were amazed and told me what are you talking about.
After listening to Shyamalan’s explanations and studying the deal with Disney, Universal executives decided to join the scheme and help the director of Split capture audiences around the world.
