‘The Asunta case’ is not fiction: the series is based on the terrifying true story of this family

On April 26, Netflix premiered the miniseries “The Asunta Case,” a six-episode production. Inspired by one of the most popular crimes in Spain, the series tells the story of the murder of Asunta Basterra, a 12-year-old girl from Galicia of Chinese origin. Responsible for this terrible crime were his adoptive parents, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra.

The true story on which the Netflix series “The Asunta Case” was based.

The case dates back to 2013, when little Asunta Basterra, just 12 years old, was found dead on a mountain near Santiago de Compostela. This tragic event sparked a complex investigation that revealed a family plot full of secrets and unexpected twists.

On September 21, 2013, Asunta’s parents reported her missing. The girl had been adopted through marriage in China when she was just one year old. Three hours after the complaint, Asuda’s body was found on a forest track near Santiago de Compostela, Galicia. An autopsy ruled out sexual assault, but confirmed she had been suffocated.

Asuda’s parents, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra, were initially identified as prime suspects. Both were well-known in Galician society, she a lawyer and he a journalist, which added a media element to a case that soon became a phenomenon of national interest.

The police investigation led to the arrest of Rosario Porto, Asunta’s stepmother, on September 24. His arrest is due to inconsistencies in his statements to the Militia. A day later, Alfonso Basterra, the stepfather, was also arrested for the alleged crime of murder. Both were sent to remand in Teixeiro prison in A Coruña on September 27.

Toxicology analyzes performed by USC’s Institute of Forensic Sciences revealed that Asunta had ingested high amounts of anxiolytics. Additionally, a teacher at Asunta’s school stated that the girl confessed that her parents gave her “white powder” that kept her asleep for two days. These details emerged during the subsequent trial in the Sixth Department of the District Court of A Coruña.

On November 19, the judge suggested that Porto and Basterra may have planned their daughter’s death.

On October 30, 2015, both parents were found guilty of murdering their adopted daughter.
