Look who is keeping an eye on the position of Senator Bolsonaro who could have his mandate revoked by the TSE

União Brasil and Novo have submitted names to contest a supplementary election, which may be called if Senator Jorge Seif (PL-SC) has his mandate revoked by the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE); The parliamentary process will resume this Tuesday the 30th

BRASÍLIA – Even without the outcome of the ruling of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) which could revoke the mandate of Senator Jorge Seif (PL-SC), four parties have already confirmed their participation in a possible by-election in Santa Catarina. An ally of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Seif is accused of abuse of economic power and the session that will decide his political fate will resume this Tuesday 30th.

National Secretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture during the Bolsonaro government, Seif was elected senator in 2022, after receiving 1,484,110 votes. The action in question is signed by the Bora Trabalho coalition, made up of PSD, Patriota (current PRD) and União Brasil, which ranked second. The parliamentarian is accused of having committed abuse of economic power, using the resources of Bolsonaro’s businessman Luciano Hang, which were allegedly donated without declarations to the Electoral Court.

In December last year, the Regional Electoral Court of Santa Catarina (TRE-SC) unanimously rejected the accusation against the parliamentarian. The Bora Trabalho coalition appealed the decision, which motivated the TSE to adjudicate the matter.

Earlier this month, Seif said in a video on social media that the prosecution against him is “undue” and that “there is no other possible outcome” than to uphold the TRE-SC’s decision. Luciano Hang, in turn, denies having provided undeclared resources to Bolsonaro’s campaign.

If the TSE decides to revoke him, Seif’s two replacements, Hermes Klann (PL) and Adrian da Blukit (PL), would also lose the right to fill the vacancy left by the senator. In March, the Ministry of Elections (MPE) expressed a favorable opinion on the conviction and suggested holding a supplementary election, taking into account the agreement established by the Federal Court (STF) in November 2023.

Four captions confirmed the Estadao who will participate in this possible election. PT, PL, PP and PSB were also contacted but did not respond.

Five names from União Brasil could compete for Seif’s assets

União Brasil, which was one of the initiators of the action against Seif, confirmed its participation in the possible elections. Even if he did not believe in the senator’s impeachment, the president of the Catarina directorate of the party, the deputy Fábio Schiochet, declared to the Estadao that five names can represent the acronym: himself, the former mayor of Florianópolis Gean Loureiro and state deputies Jair Miotto, Marcos da Rosa and Sérgio Guimarães.

“União Brasil, if it has a supplement, will certainly have a candidate. I am a pre-candidate, Gean himself mentions his name. So we will have a candidate if this happens (the revocation of Seif’s ticket), which does not “I don’t believe it,” Schiochet said.

The federal deputy is New’s bet

The president of the Novo Santa Catarina directorate, the entrepreneur Kahlil Zattar, declared that the party will have to launch the candidacy of the federal deputy Gilson Marques. Marques is one of the party’s three deputies in the Chamber of Deputies, being the tenth most voted parliamentarian in 2022, with 87,894 votes received.

MDB and PSOL confirm participation, but do not name names

Two other parties confirmed they will have candidates in the by-election, but did not name them Estadao.

The president of the Catarinense MDB, the federal deputy Carlos Chiodini (MDB), stated that the acronym must have a representative in possible elections, but there are no names mentioned by the acronym. In 2022, the Emedebist candidate was former MP Celso Maldaner, who finished the election in fifth place, having received 304,799 votes.

“It’s still early for this, we have to wait for the trial. But if elections are called we will have a candidate, but at the moment there is no name announced,” said Chiodini. OR Estadao he looked for Maldaner, but received no response.

The PSOL also intends to participate in the possible by-elections, but this too does not have names. The party’s state chair, Lea Medeiros, said the alternative had not yet been studied. In 2022, the party’s representative was Florianópolis councilor Afrânio Boppré, who came sixth, with 116,189 votes. He said that he does not intend to return to the Senate and is focused on campaigning for re-election in the Legislature of the capital of Santa Catarina.

The PDT has not decided to participate in a possible by-election

The PDT also had a candidate in 2022, with Itajaí councilor Hilda Deola finishing in penultimate place in the elections, with 66,496 votes. Catarina party president, state MP Rodrigo Minotto, said the party has not yet discussed whether or not it will participate in the by-elections. Allies believe that Minotto is a strong name to represent the party. The parliamentarian underlines that, in addition to him, other pedestrians can also run for office.

“We haven’t discussed this yet, but we have other names. However, I don’t understand it as prudent to expose it at this time, out of respect for others who may be willing to run. The party will evaluate it at the appropriate time,” he said.

OR Estadao He searched for Hilda Deola, but received no response.

The party that called for Seif’s impeachment wants the runner-up to take office in 2022

The runner-up in the 2022 Senate elections was former Santa Catarina governor Raimundo Colombo, of the PSD. His party, which was one of the authors of the appeal against Seif, is betting on the possibility that the TSE will declare him a replacement for Seif’s seat. Prior to the agreement established by the STF last year, the runner-up had taken the oath of office when the Senate-elect candidate was impeached.

The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock in the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Carlos Fávaro, is an example of this. He came second in the elections for the Senate of Mato Grosso in 2018, but took office in 2021 after the impeachment of Senator Selma Arruda (Podemos-MT), who had won those elections. Like Seif, Arruda was prosecuted for abuse of economic power.

“We believe that this is the real situation, it is the legal thesis that we understand as a legal position. We will first wait for this process to progress and then we will take a position. We will see which is the best path to adopt, whoever decides is the TSE”, he said former governor Raimundo Colombo Estadao.
