Green Arrow has always struggled to find a true rival, and now the overhaul of his origins may have put an end to that search
Although Green Arrow is part of the classic high-ranking lineups of the Justice League, Oliver Queen has always seemed like a minor hero, especially because he lacks an important element to be considered “First Division”: a strong rival like Lex Luthor is for Superman or the Joker It’s for Batman. But the recent revision of his origin seems to solve this problem.

Beware of spoilers for Green Arrow #11!
The origin of Green Arrow It had already gone through a few reboots., precisely for similar reasons; and also the series Arrow from The CW tried to give the character a boost. However, even so, the combined efforts of comic book and television writers have not been enough to fill the shoes Oliver Queen needs, especially in this search for a decent archenemy.
One of DC Comics’ biggest challenges with Green Arrow over the past few decades has been differentiating him from Batman, as both have similar characteristics. And the publisher has already noticed that a big part of the problem is the lack of antagonists like those present in Batman’s excellent gallery of villains.

Well, basically, Ollie’s initial journey involves transforming from a spoiled rich kid into a master archer after running out of potential for resilience and determination when his boat sinks on remote Starfish Island.
The fight for survival would awaken the mental strength so that he could overcome his limitations and become a formidable fighter, transforming his vanity and pride into a selfless and heroic journey.
New origin of Green Arrow
In the recent Green Arrow n.11, the plot turns longtime enemy Merlyn into an important figure in teaching archery after Ollie’s return from Starfish Island. This completely repositions the rivalry they’ve had over the years.

In the new origin, after escaping the island and taking on the nickname Green Arrow, the aspiring hero still needed to improve his skills. To do this, he sought out the famous archer Merlin, a highly skilled archer who worked in circuses and showed off his skills. Unbeknownst to Ollie, Merlyn has become a brutal hitman.
While teaching Ollie and taking the young Green Arrow under his wing, he trained the hero while secretly trying to recruit him into the League of Assassins. Once Ollie found out, he challenged Merlyn to a final shootout and won. So his master began to hate him.
This twist turns Green Arrow and Merlin’s story into something more personal than their initial rivalry, as it unites them as students and teachers – and even as a master who treated his apprentice like a son. We’ll see if this results in a more complex opponent for Oliver Queen.
