Eight people have died and 21 are missing following heavy rains this week in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, the civil protection service said on Wednesday.
Authorities reported more than 1,400 people displaced following storms that caused rising river levels and flooding in several parts of the state, affecting 104 municipalities.
In a report on hydrological conditions released Tuesday, the regional government predicted the risk of flooding “virtually across the state” given the prospect of “heavy rainfall” in the coming days.
The bulletin also reports that flooding will be severe in many river basins, with the possibility of flash floods and mass earth movements in regions with steep slopes.
State governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) expressed his condolences over the deaths caused by the storms on social media platform X on Wednesday, adding that the government was working to locate the missing and ensure safety in risk areas.
