The judge recently sentenced to a long prison term to Robert Sylvester Kelly, aka R. Kelly, known for his 1990s R&B hits, after being convicted in September 2021 of one count of racketeering and eight violations of a sex trafficking law. The 55-year-old singer was sentenced to 30 years in prison, which means he presumably could be a free man again at 80. However, as prosecutors have warned of his continued danger to society and his lack of remorse, there will be a number of conditions and restrictions that Kelly will have to abide by if that day comes.
By pronouncing the sentence of 30 years, TMZ Judge Ann M. Donnelly reportedly said that upon her release from prison, R. Kelly will need to undergo mental health care, including treatment for an unspecified sexual disorder. During the trial, Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean (who also represented Bill Cosby) asked for a shorter sentence based on her client’s “hypersexuality” resulting from childhood sexual abuse.
The judge also ordered R. Kelly to avoid contact with people under the age of 18. The only way he could find himself in the presence of a younger person would be if he were a family member or in a therapeutic setting with a “responsible adult” present. , and this should be approved in advance by your probation officer.
He will also be required to inform anyone who chooses to live with him that he is a sex offender and will remain on probation for five years after his release.
R. Kelly has already been in prison since July 2019. Forty-five witnesses testified in the case against the singer, with allegations including luring fans and hopeful singers into sexual abuse situations and locking victims in rooms for days without access to Toilet. or food.
The sentence came nine months after he was convicted of nine federal sex crimes and follows decades of charges that began in the 1990s when he illegally married 15-year-old singer Aaliyah Haughton, who died in 2001. Although he was arrested in 2002 on 21 counts of child pornography, the case took six years to try and the singer was eventually acquitted. But the accusations resumed in the following years, most notably that he was female brainwashing in 2017, and it was prosecuted for sexual assault in 2018.
The allegations against R. Kelly surfaced in 2019 docuseries for life Survived R. Kelly (now available for netflix subscribers ) and was arrested shortly after.
The judicial battles are not over for the R&B singer, despite being sentenced to 30 years in prison. He will subsequently go on trial in Chicago for federal obstruction and child pornography, and will also face state charges in Illinois and Minnesota. We’ll have to see if the upcoming prosecution translates into more time to add to his conviction.
