HBO announced the cancellation of “The Time Traveler’s Wife” following the end of its only season, ending its characters’ romance after six episodes.

“While HBO isn’t moving forward with a second season, it’s been our privilege to partner with master storytellers Steven Moffat and David Nutter,” HBO said in a statement. “We are so grateful for your passion, hard work and care in adapting this beloved book. We also thank Theo and Rose, and the rest of our brilliant cast for their heartfelt performances, which completely captivated the audience.”

Adapted from Audrey Niffenegger’s novel of the same name, the series was developed by British producer and screenwriter Steven Moffat (former “Doctor Who” showrunner and creator of “Sherlock”), directed by David Nutter (“Game of Thrones”) and starring Rose Leslie (the Ygritte from “Game of Thrones”) and Theo James (the four from “Divergent”) as a time-constrained couple in their marriage.

Launched in May, the attraction followed the story of Clare (Leslie), who for much of her life kept a secret. From the age of six she saw a friend she considered imaginary: a kind and funny man, sometimes old, sometimes young, who would appear in the woods behind her house to tell her stories of the future. But as the years went by and she became a grown woman, Clare began to realize that her friend was not imaginary, but a time traveler from the future. And not just any future, but her own future, as her destiny was to become the time traveler’s wife.

“There was enough content in the book for more than just one season,” Moffat told TVLine upon release. “But at the same time, I’d still call it a limited series because it can’t last forever. It has to end. We already know a little bit about how it ends. In episode 3, you know he’s going to get hit in a forest. You know. some point he’ll lose (spoiler). So it’s a story of fate, I think. The end is built in the beginning. “

The HBO series was not the first film adaptation of this story. “The Time Traveler’s Wife” had already become a film in 2009, starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams in the lead roles – the biggest difficulty to remember is that the film was called “I Love You Forever” in Brazil.
