According to Talker Research (formerly OnePoll US), an online survey of 2,000 Americans conducted in April concluded that the “ideal” movie length is… 92 minutes! Respondents actually chose this figure for their preferred broadcast length, with 15% saying that films longer than 120 minutes (2 hours) were “acceptable” and only 2% were “satisfied” with a film longer than 120 minutes 150 minutes (2:30 hours ).
At first glance, this statement seems at odds with commercial reality, as nine of the ten highest-grossing films of all time are longer than two hours, three of which – Avengers: Endgame, Avatar, Waterway and Titanic – are longer. Over three hours each. Only The Lion King, the ninth highest-grossing live-action film of 2019, clocks in at just over two hours, namely 118 minutes (which still falls short of the ideal 92 minutes!).
And as for the two phenomenal films of the summer: Oppenheimer lasted 3 hours and 9 seconds, Barbie 1 hour and 54 minutes: if the latter is close to the so-called “perfect” score, the former is very far. !
However, a new problem arose recently after some theaters stopped showing Martin Scorsese’s 206-minute (or 3:26) film The Killers of the Flower Moon with an unauthorized intermission. The director has already defended the length of his feature film, saying:You can sit in front of the TV and watch something for five hours… There are many who watch the theater for 3.5 hours… Respect the cinema.“
Recent research from What to Watch shows that the average length of the most commercially successful movies will increase to 141 minutes in 2022, up from 110 minutes in 1981. , the ability of streaming platforms to ignore the rigors of movie screening schedules, or the willingness to deliver the expensive visual effects and action sequences that have proliferated over the past decade.
Talker Research also asked survey respondents about their use of subtitles when watching TV: 33% said they “never” used them, while 16% said they “always” used them. However, the figures appear to be more age-related, with younger people more likely to use them: 23% of Gen Y (or Millennials) said they “always” use subtitles, as did 30% of Gen Z.
Avengers: Endgame, Avatar, Titanic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens or Avengers: Infinity War – All of them are among the highest-grossing films of all time And it’s all over two hours long – you can watch it streaming on Disney+.
