The success of the Netflix series “The Asunta Case” has revived public interest in the murder of Asunta Basterra, committed by her parents, Alfonso Basterra and Rosario Porto, in 2013. Thus, endless doubts have arisen from viewers about the real facts, such as what was the evidence that incriminated Porto.
It must be recalled that, from the beginning, the authorities found evidence that questioned the role of the parents in the case, as well as inconsistencies between the statements of suspects and witnesses. However, only one video was the key to shattering Rosario Porto’s presumed innocence.
The definitive evidence that incriminated Rosario Porto in the “Assuda Case”
After their daughter disappeared, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra went to the police station to report the incident. In that first meeting with the authorities, Asunta’s mother stated that she had spent the afternoon alone at her parents’ house in Teo (a Spanish municipality near Santiago de Compostela), while Asunta studied in her apartment in Santiago.
However, this statement, which would have proved that he had nothing to do with his daughter’s disappearance, collapsed with a simple video.
Security cameras at the Galuresa gas station captured video of Rosario Porto on her way to her family’s home that same afternoon, but with a small silhouette in the passenger seat, showing her accompanied by her daughter. And, consequently, that Asunta was with her on the family property near where her body was found.
That video was the final piece of evidence that led police to the arrest of Rosario Porto, minutes after Asuda’s body was cremated. The next day, the girl’s father, Alfonso Basterra, was also arrested.
The judge in the case, during one of Rosario Porto’s interrogations, said: “We have timed it,” referring to the fact that they had checked and proven all of Asuda’s movements before her disappearance.
What happened to Rosario Porto in real life?
In 2015, Asuda’s mother was sentenced to 18 years in prison after being found guilty of murdering the minor.
However, Porto did not manage to survive his sentence: in 2020 he committed suicide in prison, after other suicide attempts in prison.
