What is it about?
A motley crew of podcasters investigate the mysterious disappearance of three strangers in a fairly small Irish coastal town. Their findings reveal a case of scale and strangeness beyond anything they could have imagined. Through these characters trying their best to distinguish reality from fiction surrounding the investigation, their colleagues and, even worse, their own existence, the series questions our relationship with truth and highlights the stories we tell ourselves to justify and legitimize our beliefs. our fears.
Bodkin, a series created by Jez Scharf with Will Fortes, Siobhan Cullen, Robin Cara…now on Netflix
Only murders in the building
Are you just a fan of murders in the building and miss the series? Good news: Bodkin is made for you! Because the pitch of the Netflix series is more or less the same: podcasters investigating true crimes set out to solve the mystery!
Heading to Ireland, which seems like the perfect place to uncover an ancient story that disappeared twenty years ago. Moreover, it is a land of born storytellers, very, very talkative storytellers indeed, whether by the fire or in crowded, noisy bars. Added to this is the cynical humor and spirit that characterizes the inhabitants, as well as landscapes of breathtaking beauty. This is where Bodkin sets the scene.
In terms of treatment, Tony is also very close to just murder. Bodkin establishes itself from the first minutes as a black comedy with thriller touches. We follow Will Forte as Gilbert, an American podcaster – with a knack for always widening his eyes – in search of his next big story.
Gilbert needs help for this. So that leaves a real investigative journalist with a goofy character named Dove (Siobhán Cullen) who could be mistaken for Chloë Sevigny behind her dark glasses.
Originally from Dublin, but living in London, he goes through a real professional crisis and is forced to join Gilbert, who hates him from the depths of his being. “I am a journalist“, she laments at one point,”And I’ll stick around as a consultant in the middle of a true crime podcast.“
And then there’s Amy (Robin Cara), a production assistant who’s been a delight, hiding her own insecurities with her over-the-top enthusiasm. Despite its good intentions, it is clear that it is quite transparent.
Produced by Barack and Michelle Obama, Bodkin falls into the category of a nice series with its somewhat stereotypical but fleshed-out characters, a fairly well-rounded plot, but above all, its setting in Ireland is its real added value. Of course, folklore prevails everywhere, but we know that it is done on purpose.
Bodkin is currently available on Netflix.
