Google Messages will show the names of unknown senders, the website says

Google Messages may show the sender’s name in your inbox even when you don’t save the person’s number in your calendar, the website says

OR Google Messages for Android prepares a new feature to show the names of senders who are not saved in the calendar. The option is still under development in the Beta version of the application, according to Android Authority.

Currently, when you receive a message from an unknown profile, you can only see the person’s mobile number, without any additional information. The change would follow a very similar path to that of Whatsapp already done: the apps of Objective includes a person’s display name next to their phone number if you haven’t already registered that contact in your address book.

In this case, it would be part of the strategy adopted by Google to place the app on the same shelf as more traditional messengers, such as WhatsApp itself, iMessage and Telegram. Mensagens has incorporated several features of competitors with the adoption of the RCS protocolsuch as creating groups and sending photos and videos, but it is still widely used by people only as a platform for exchanging SMS.

Also, the app recentlygot an integration with Gemini AI to generate texts, but it is only available on some devices, and has also been enhanced with a tool that turn photos into emojis.

The user can still hide their name

According to Android Authority, the application will only display the sender’s name if the user enables this option in their account. To do this, Messages provides a section called “Profile discovery” (“Profile discovery”, in free translation) in which it will be possible to expose the displayed name to other people.

The new feature is still in development and will need to be tested in the Beta version before reaching devices in the stable version of the app. The company has not made any comments on the feature so far.
