A cultural phenomenon, “Pulp Fiction” has left deep traces in world cinema. Released in 1994, the film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino was an immediate success with audiences and critics and became an influential model for what came next in cinema.
The film is recognized for its distinctive features: its dialogue full of references to popular culture, its bizarre characters, its stylized violence and striking soundtrack.
However, the most notable feature of “Pulp Fiction” is its non-linear narrative. The film follows several interconnected events, each played by different characters, which connect during the screening. However, all of this is told in chronological order.
Perhaps, due to this confusing story structure, some people may feel confused while watching “Pulp Fiction”. With this in mind, we decided to order the events of “Pulp Fiction” chronologically. Check it out below!
First of all it is important to inform about how the film is structured. The plot of “Pulp Fiction” is composed of three main chapters, called in the film itself as , AND .
However, the film has a prologue, an epilogue and preludes between these three chapters.
So the film looks like this:
With that said, let’s now organize the above sequences in chronological order.
Let’s see the chronological order of events in “Pulp Ficiton”:
This sequence is a flashback to the prelude scene of “The Gold Watch”. In it we see a child Butch (the character in the adult version is played by Bruce Willis) who receives a visit from a Vietnam War veteran (Christopher Walken). The captain gives little Butch a gold watch that belonged to his late father and passed down from generation to generation.
The famous sequence in which the famous “royale with cheese” dialogue occurs. In the scene, assassins Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent (John Travolta) talk trivia during a car ride. They arrive at an apartment to retrieve a briefcase for their boss, gangster Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames), which is in the possession of a man named Brett.
While Vincent (John Travolta) and Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) execute Brett, a man hiding in the bathroom surprises the two assassins by shooting him. But miraculously no bullets hit them. After dealing with the “surprise” killer, Vincent, Jules and Marvin, an informant present in the apartment, leave the scene with Marsellus’ (Ving Rhames) briefcase.
However, in the car, Vincent accidentally shoots Marvin in the head when the vehicle goes over a bump in the road. To deal with the situation, they call in “The Wolf” (Harvey Keitel), a “problem solver” who helps them get rid of the body and clean up the mess. It’s at this moment that a pair of assassins trade their blood-stained clothes for basic T-shirts and shorts.
The first scene of the film, showing the couple Pumpkin (Tim Roth) and Honey Bunny (Amanda Plummer) eating in a diner. They talk about having committed a robbery there and, eventually, they pull out their weapons.
Shortly after the incident solved by “The Wolf” (Harvey Keitel), Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent (John Travolta) go to eat at the same restaurant that Pumpkin (Tim Roth) and Honey Bunny (Amanda Plummer) plan to host . rob.
Wearing their new clothes, the two discuss Jules’ possible retirement from crime after the “miracle” at Brett’s apartment. Vincent goes to the bathroom while Pumpkin and Honey Bunny announce the robbery and dominate the entire place.
Pumpkin points the gun at Jules and demands the briefcase. However, Jules turns the tables by pulling out his gun. Vincent leaves the bathroom and Jules allows Pumpkin and Honey Bunny to leave the restaurant with all the money. Afterwards, Jules and Vincent leave the place with the suitcase.
Wearing T-shirts and shorts, Vincent (John Travolta) and Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) deliver the suitcase to Marsellus (Ving Rhames) at a bar. Meanwhile, Marsellus is bribing boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) to lose his next fight.
Vincent is tasked with keeping Marsellus’ wife, Mia (Uma Thurman), company. After dancing at a themed restaurant, Mia encounters Vincent’s heroin and overdoses. Desperate, Vincent takes Mia to the house of his drug dealer (Eric Stoltz), where he receives an injection of adrenaline and recovers.
The flashback where little Butch receives a gold watch from a war veteran is a dream. The boxer (Willis) wakes up to the sound of the gong, before the fight begins.
8th – “The golden watch”
Butch (Willis) betrays Marsellus (Ving Rhames) and wins the boxing match. Furthermore, he accidentally kills his opponent. Butch plans to run away with his girlfriend Fabienne (Maria de Medeiros), who is in a motel. However, Fabienne forgets to take Butch’s gold watch.
Furious, Butch returns to his apartment to retrieve it. However, when he returns home, he notices someone is in the bathroom and sees a gun on the counter. Then, Vincent (John Travolta), sent by Marsellus, comes out of the bathroom and Butch shoots him to death.
On the way out, Butch meets Marsellus at the traffic light. Butch then runs over Marsellus, who chases him into a pawn shop. However, the shop owner captures both of them and ties them to a chair. With the help of the henchmen, the shop owner rapes Marsellus. Butch manages to escape his bonds, grabs a katana and kills everyone, saving Marsellus. Marsellus forgives Butch and asks him to run away and not tell anyone what happened.
