Simon Astaire portrayed Yvain in the Camelot series, a knight in the midst of a teenage crisis and a bit of a fool, for the first five seasons of the show. The brother of Queen Guinevere, the son of Sister Celia and Leodaghan, Yvain ended up founding his own clan with Gowen, Arthur’s nephew: the Little Walkers.

I remember when the series came, we said to ourselves: “But already, how is it possible to be on the air with something like this?!”
It follows: “But really, when we saw the studios, we said to ourselves… (…) There’s no clue, it’s so crazy, that’s how Alexander holds it. We said that Alexander had so much faith in his project. In every position…”

Indeed, Alexandre Astier always maintained creative control of Camelot, overseeing the script, dialogue, editing, music, direction and production. Simon Astier recalls the inspiration conveyed by Alexander:
We know what he wants, so we follow him to the death, and it’s true, I never imagined him talking to people like that, because often the risk is that on TV you’re asked to look for as many targets as possible.
A comic show with a medieval atmosphere fantasyNevertheless, it quickly caught on with the M6 audience from its first season, which aired in 2005:

“It’s crazy to see how much of a phenomenon it’s become in just a few months”, confirms Simon Astier. (…) “There was still a Virgin Megastore on the Champs-Élysées that was full for signings, it was a crazy phenomenon, and even today people were accompanied by that language, that tone, I don’t know what has changed. Whether it’s landscape or television production, at least it proved to all of us that we had to defend our projects with confidence.”
To the surprise of fans, Simone Astier was not in the casting of the feature film Kaamelott – the first part, the continuation of the series on the big screen. Will we see Yvain in the second installment, which is planned to be a two-parter in 2024? To be continued…
