How Bill Pullman’s iconic speech helped give Independence Day its name
it’s hard to imagine Independence Day be called something other than Independence Day, but that was almost the case while the film was still in production. In a June 2020 interview with Gossipify’s Mike Reyes, Bill Pullman revealed that 20th Century Fox really wanted to call the film Judgment Day for reasons, but his iconic speech before the film’s final battle helped Rolland Emmerich defend his favorite title, saying:
We shot it at night, of course, because it’s dark and not on a stage or anything. It was really late, and it was moved early, as Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich were vying with Fox at the time for the title. I think it would have been doomsday. This is what Fox wanted, and it was a title at the time. [for a] disastrous movie. They really wanted Independence Day, so we had to have a good speech. And then they put it together, and a few nights later Dean came into my trailer and said, ‘Do you want to see this?’ … So he came on VHS, he showed me the cut of the speech and I said “Holy Mother, you have to call this movie Independence Day”. And they did.
Listen, not only does the world have to thank Bill Pullman for helping save the world, but we are also indebted to him for preserving one of the greatest movie titles.
