Another 10 years: This big change may surprise fans of the TV series Interview with the Vampire

That’s right, Interview with the Vampire is finally legally available here after almost two years of waiting. Paramount+ picked up Season 1, causing a stir on the other side of the Atlantic.

A faithful adaptation of Anne Rice’s gothic and macabre novel, it follows the adventures and amorous wanderings of Louis de la Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) and Lestat (Sam Reid), two vampires in New Orleans in early 2009. 20th century. While the series takes some liberties that don’t change its quality in any way, there is an important change made by the writers.

Claudia, the main character

In the 1994 film version, Claudia is played by a young Kirsten Dunst. Although she is described as a 5-year-old little girl in the novels, the writers chose her age.

Indeed, in the film Interview with the Vampire, the one Louis and Lestat die to save from death is 11 years old. Scriptural freedom that allowed studios to sidestep the nation’s child labor laws and prevented Dunst from shooting as much as he wanted.

In the case of a TV series that lasts longer than a movie, the question came up again. During shooting days, which can last up to 10 hours, it was impossible to have a ten-year-old actor, as showrunner Rollin Jones explains. of this interview :

“Claudia is such an important character in the series and in the universe, we needed her presence as much as possible.”

The character here is played by Bailey Bass, an 18-year-old actress during season 1, although her character is only 14. Turning Claudia into a teenager in the midst of an existential crisis gives this young vampire a whole new dimension. which maintains a father-son relationship especially with Lestat and Louis.

And this choice is not trivial. By choosing the lead actress, the producers avoided the criticism received by the 1994 film, which saw a 12-year-old Kirsten Dunst kiss a much older Brad Pitt. A moment that the main stakeholder didn’t seem to take well…
