“Dune Prophecy”: the new series that will show the beginnings of the Bene Gesserit sect

“Dune” is one of the most famous science fiction books and its 2021 film adaptation, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, was a huge success, making the sequel “Dune: Part Two” gross over 630 million dollars at the worldwide box office.

Although the third installment will adapt the second novel in the saga, “Dune Messiah”, there is other news for fans of the “Dune” universe, namely the development of a new series.

“Dune: Prophecy” will focus on the origins of the Bene Gesserit

According to a report from the portal “Variety”, the idea had been formed since 2019 under the title “Dune: The Sisterhood”, but now it will be known as “Dune: Prophecy” and will be based on the novel “Sisterhood”. of Dune’ written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

A notable fact is that, if the series follows the books faithfully, it will take place ten thousand years before the arrival of Paul Atreides, the central character of Denis Villeneuve’s recent films.

The plot will follow the story of two brothers from the Harkonnen family, who will fight to establish the sect known as the Bene Gesserit, which was of great importance in “Dune”, mixing in politics and marital ties between the great houses.

For example, in the first installment, Prince Paul meets Reverend Mother Superior, the leader of the Bene Gesserit, who tests the protagonist’s powers.

While there are currently no details on when it might be released or an official synopsis, it is speculated that the chapters will show the blueprint for the creation of the Kwisatz Haderach, the first human who can learn the powers of the Bene Gesserit and capture the principle of the conflict between Houses Harkonnen and Atreides, whose rivalry has been significant for years.

“Dune: Prophecy” will have an excellent cast including Emily Watson, Tabu, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Johdi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka and Faoilann Cunningham, among others .

Who are they

Bene Gesserit and why they are important to the story of “Dune”

The Bene Gesserit group are known in “Dune” for their skills in body control techniques, psychological manipulation, and meditation, which they use to facilitate them. A distinguishing feature is that only women can belong to this sect, since they are the only ones who have the ability to wield these powers.

The Bene Gesserit have complete control over their bodies, allowing them to manage aspects such as blood flow, heart rate, internal organs, and fertility. Thanks to this mastery, they can choose the sex of their offspring and neutralize foreign bodies, which makes them immune to poisons. Additionally, they stand out for their unparalleled hand-to-hand combat skills.

A curious fact is that Denis Villeneuve explained in 2019 why it is important to show the history of the Bene Gesserit in detail and how it would help to better understand this fictional world.

“The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me,” Villeneuve said. “Centering a series around this powerful class of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring, but also a dynamic setting for the TV series.”

“IMDb” reports that, currently, “Dune: Prophecy” is scheduled to have 6 chapters in its first season and will be directed by the streaming company Max, although the director of the project has not yet been chosen.
