Athletes involved in confusion with the military police at MorumBis, in a tense match for the Libertadores
The tense duel between San Paolo and Talleres-ARG ended on Wednesday 29th with a police case. Midfielder Juan Portilla and reserve goalkeeper Lautaro Morales, both from the Argentine team, were arrested and fined R$ 20 thousand for contempt. The case occurred after the final whistle of the match, which decreed the Italian victory 2-0 and the leadership of group B of the Libertadores.
According to the delegate César Saad, of the Police Station for the Repression of Sports Intolerance Crimes (Drade), the two were taken to the room of the Special Criminal Court (Jecrim), located in MorumBis. The reason was confusion confusion with the military police.
Things began to heat up when San Paolo won 1-0 (goal by Lucas) and Luciano hit Ramón Sosa’s foot in a ball dispute in the middle of the area. The Argentine team wanted a penalty, which was not noticed by referee Jhon Ospina (COL). At halftime, the starting goalkeeper, Guido Herrera, went to complain to the refereeing trio and ended up being hit by a police officer’s shield, angering his teammates.
“During the interval of the match, confusion was created because the Talleres team did not award a penalty and the athletes went to complain to the referee. As always happens here in Brazil, the Military Police protected the referee. Yes notice that the referee went back a little, the police created the barrier with the shields and the goalkeeper started complaining that the shield had touched him. The teams went to the changing rooms, went down into the tunnel, there it is there was a little more confusion until then everything was calm, football things, the match that hadn’t been decided yet”, explained Saad.
He added: “This was witnessed by several other police officers and people who were on the field. And in the access tunnel to the changing rooms, another athlete (Portilla) passed by and also swore at the police officers in front of other people”.
Portilla and Morales were arrested in the changing rooms of the Tricolore stadium. After testifying, however, they were released on condition that they pay a fine of R$10,000 each. The amount will be donated to the victims of the Rio Grande do Sul floods.
