Mike Flanagan, from The Haunting of Hill House, will direct new The Exorcist film

Filmmaker takes on the horror franchise with the mission of taking it to another level after the failure of 2023’s The Exorcist: The Devotee

The Exorcist: Deceiver (The Exorcist: The Deceiverin free translation), sequence of The Exorcist: The Devotee(2023), already has its director. According to the Variety, Mike Flanaganresponsible for successful productions such as The Haunting of Hill House (2018), Midnight Mass (2021) and The Fall of the House of Usher (2023), will lead the novelty.

Negative reception of The Devotee didn’t stop trilogy

Flanagan takes on the novelty with the challenge of lifting the horror franchise after the critical and public failure of The Devoteereleased in October 2023. Universal would have spent US$400 million on acquiring rights to the franchise, not only to produce the trilogy, but to use the brand in other commercial actions.

Still, the studio must review the script for the second film before proceeding with production, to ensure the sequel performs better. During his visit to cinemas around the world, The Exorcist: The Devoteeraised around US$136 million.

He also celebrated the opportunity to work with Blumhouse again, after collaborating with the producer on The mirror (2013), Hush: Death Listens (2016) and Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016): “Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve done some of my favorite work, makes this even more exciting”he added.

What it is The Exorcist: The Devotee?

In history, Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr., Hamilton) is a widower, who takes care of his daughter alone, Angela (Lidya Jewett, Good Girls), twelve years ago. After leaving the girl and her friend, katherine (Olivia O’Neill), disappear from school and return three days later, with no memory of what happened, he needs to confront evil.

Desperate to save his daughter’s life, Victor goes after the only person alive who has witnessed something like this before: the actress Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), who had his life changed forever by an episode with his daughter, Reagan (Linda Blair), five decades earlier.
