Research reveals that countries like the United States have offered more opportunities to professionals with master’s and doctoral degrees
Over the last 20 years, with greater democratization of access to education, the number of graduates has grown in the country. In Brazil there are approximately 30 people with a master’s degree per 100 thousand inhabitants. The data comes from CHIEFS (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel), which also requires that there be 10 doctors for every 100 thousand inhabitants.
However, in the country we are witnessing a sort of “intellectual flight”. This means that many of these highly trained professionals, with at least a master’s degree, choose to live abroad, in countries like the United States.
For Alessandra Crisanto, CEO of Study & Work USA, this research demonstrates the importance of postgraduate studies for those who want to invest in a career abroad. “It shows that having a master’s or doctoral degree can significantly increase your chances of being hired by American companies.”
The technical sectors are the ones that employ the most
Previously, thinking of emigrating to the United States to work was synonymous with occupying positions in the so-called underjobs, i.e. those positions that pay little, sometimes do not require documentation and which demand a lot from the worker. However, this scenario has changed drastically.
With the increase in skilled professionals, the profile of Brazilians hired by foreign companies is very different. Nowadays, there is an increased hiring of managers, consultants and other positions that require a great deal of technical and/or academic knowledge.
It is no coincidence that the sector that hires the most Brazilians is STEM, an acronym in English for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These include information technology professionals, developers, researchers and healthcare professionals, among others.
“Brazilian STEM professionals have a privileged position in this panorama, since their skills and knowledge are highly appreciated in the North American job market”, underlines Crisanto, who underlines that there are more than 10 thousand STEM courses, for the most diverse fields, including for lawyers. “Therefore, with the growing demand for skilled professionals in these sectors, especially in the United States, Brazilians with a STEM background have good opportunities to find work in North American companies.”
The key to success
The first step for those who want to work in the United States is, without a doubt, professional training. In addition to obtaining a three-year degree, it is essential to continue your studies and invest in a master’s degree, specializations and, if possible, a doctorate.
Furthermore, having an international professional consultancy with knowledge that strengthens the relationship between potential hires and those seeking professional placement helps a lot.
“The consultancy’s work is critical in connecting these professionals with study and work opportunities in the United States. Its work not only benefits the people it serves, but also helps promote international collaboration and knowledge exchange,” concludes Alessandra.
