“The Rings of Power” loses its protagonist after the first season

Actress Nazanin Boniadi, who plays the healer Bronwyn, revealed that her decision is linked to her activism

Iranian actress Nazanin Boniadi, who played the human healer Bronwyn in the first season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, will not return for new episodes of the Prime Video series. In the plot, Bronwyn is the mother of Theo (Tyroe Muhafidin) and has a forbidden romance with the elf warrior Arondir (Ismael Cruz Cordova).

Focus on activism

Boniadi, who recently finished filming the independent film “A Mosquito in Your Ear,” explained his absence in an Instagram post. “I left acting in September 2022 to focus solely on the #WomanLifeFreedom uprising in Iran and to defend the people of my country who risked everything for freedom,” the actress wrote. “Despite my passion for acting, I knew I would need a very special project to convince me to divide my time between my day job and my vocation as an activist.”

Perceived absence

Boniadi’s absence was noted by fans in the Season 2 teaser, which has racked up 13 million views in the past two weeks. Additionally, Bronwyn, Theo, and Arondir did not appear in the season 1 finale, sparking speculation about their futures on the series. However, Cordova and Muhafidin have been confirmed for the new episodes.

New characters

This week, the production also confirmed that actor Rory Kinnear (“The Diplomat”) will play Tom Bombadil, a beloved character from JRR Tolkien’s books, in the new season. Season two will return to Tolkien’s Second Age and promises to show “the evil rise of Sauron as he continues his vengeful quest for absolute power.”
