Princess Sarahcute little girl”… If those titles mean anything to you, it’s because you know this Japanese animated series that arrived in our region in 1987 on Channel 5. A true institution for schoolchildren who grew up in the 90s, the show Youpi! School’s Out was a block of shows every day from 5pm to 6pm.

Running before Arnold & Willy and after The Smurfs, Princess Sarah was a must-see show for kids ages 7 and up. The latter follows the adventures of young Sarah as she is sent to England by her father, who made his fortune in Indian mines, to attend boarding school. As soon as he arrives, he impresses everyone with the richness of his clothes and the sophistication of his appearance.

Everything will change suddenly. On his birthday, he learns of his father’s death in India. Sarah is orphaned and ruined. Then a new life begins for the young girl. But Sarah harbors a small, brave light deep inside…

Everything you need to know about Princess Sarah

Princess Sarah is one of these short-lived animated series, as it only has 44 short episodes, all broadcast in 1985 in Japan. It is an adaptation of a novel from children’s literature written by the Anglo-American novelist Frances Hodgson Burnett in 1905. Although the cartoon takes some liberties with the base material, the latter remains relatively faithful.

The only noticeable difference is the age of the heroine (8-10 years between the beginning and the end compared to the 7-13 years of the novel) and the ending: Sarah does not finally return to her Mangini boarding house and settle down forever. At Mr. Crisford’s. But he turns Becky into an animal.

The first broadcast of Princess Sarah was a real success on La Cinq, so much so that the series has been repeated over the years (notably at Club Dorothée in 1994 or on France 3 at the Minikeums in 1996). A new generation to discover the adventures of Sara, Lavinia and other students.

Unfortunately for Netflix subscribers, the series will leave the catalog on June 14th, and this was the only platform that offered it for free… hurry up and watch it again!
