Even though a high volume of pornographic content already circulates on the platform, the social network formalizes the presence of material
OX, old man Twitter, has updated its policies regarding the posting of adult content on the site. Explicit posts had already been published on the platform previously, but the rules of the social network did not officially allow such publications. Now, the new usage rules contained in the Adult Content Policy formally authorize the publication of pornographic content on the website.
However, these publications must comply with specific rules. First, the content must have been produced and distributed consensually and must be appropriately labeled. Furthermore, adult images cannot occupy prominent places, such as the profile photo. It will be possible to report any post that does not comply with these standards.
According to the platform, “adult content is any consensually produced and distributed material that depicts adult nudity or sexual behavior that is pornographic or intended to cause sexual arousal. This also applies to photographic or animated content generated by artificial intelligence, such as cartoons, hentai or souls.”
Such publications will be prohibited for children, users who do not provide their date of birth, and people who choose not to view pornographic posts.
“We believe in the autonomy of adults to get involved and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires and experiences, including those related to sexuality,” informs the text of the updated rules of use.
The platform Elon Musk had been criticized for its lack of moderation and excessive proliferation of certain types of content. In November 2022, the billionaire fired much of his team of data scientists who worked on a civic integrity team. Additionally, according to an investigation by the eSafety Commissioner, an Australian government online safety body, Musk has reduced his global trust and safety team by a third, with an 80% decrease in the number of safety engineers. The result: less control over the content published online.
As a result, posts have been reported since mid-February with messages translated as “my nudes on my profile” (or “nudes in my profile”, in the original English). The idea is to attract other users to join the publications of these profiles. The messages are published by fake and newly created accounts.
Therefore, allowing the publication of pornographic media may represent another step towards flooding the platform with unmoderated images and videos of adult content.
