Released in French cinemas almost two weeks ago, The Black Phone marks Scott Derrickson’s return to the horror genre that launched him. And a detail involving the assassin, played by Ethan Hawke, makes it possible to support the young hero’s course.

It was expected to hit theaters with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But a creative dispute decided otherwise, and it was Sam Raimi who was entrusted with the Marvel film. Suddenly, Scott Derrickson returned to his first love: horror. Black Phone is an adaptation of the story by Joe Hill (son of Stephen King), in which a teenager becomes the victim of a kidnapper and child killer, played by Ethan Hawke.
Nicknamed Captor, the latter isn’t the only threat Finn (Mason Thames) faces throughout the story. Because the latter must also face, like her sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), physical and psychological abuse by their father (Jeremy Davies), who is presented as an alcoholic.
Jeremy Davis in “The Black Phone”
To show that the violence Finn is subjected to takes many forms, Scott Derrickson draws several parallels. As when the hero on pain of punishment has to move without waking his father, and then captured. Or, as noted Screen ratioThe fact that Ethan Hawke wears, at one point, a mask that hides only the lower part of his face and recalls Jeremy Davis’ beard.
As with many fantasy and/or horror films, elements of the genre echo more real-life things. The fact that Finn manages to resist the kidnapper can be related to his experience with his father. And when she stands up to her captor, everything shows that she is ready to speak out against the domestic violence she was a victim of.
