It’s been a few weeks now and it’s official: 2024’s most popular TV series is coming back for a few extra seasons. Originally conceived as a miniseries, Shogun – adapted from James Clavell’s bestselling novel – met with significant critical and public success, enabling FX to post its best-ever audience for an original program.
Shogun is set in the early 1600s in a Japan torn by clan wars. Stranded on the beaches of the archipelago, English sailor John Blackthorne is greeted by Yoshi Toranaga, a powerful lord who only wants to assume a role of power and establish his authority over the other regent clans.
A second season will “probably” see the light of day
The American cable channel (part of the Disney Group) has signed a partnership deal with Japanese actor and producer Hiroyuki Sanada to renew the series for several seasons. A Shôgun renewal for Seasons 2 and 3 is not 100% official, though there is still a possibility that the series will continue as anthologies and standalone stories.

The natural end of Shogun
Thanks to specialist historian Frederic Kriens (who is credited as a season 1 consultant), the two showrunners already have the sequence of events in mind: “We know how it’s all going to come together, and it felt like a natural ending to the series thanks to the story that Frederik Kriens told us.”
However, Shogun Season 2 will only see the light of day as a direct sequel to Season 1, provided the writing is to the complete satisfaction of the creators and the channel: “We’ll get together to write it, and if what comes out of it isn’t good, then we won’t do it.” Justin Marks commented.
