Globo admits it will not profit from the Paris Olympics

According to the director, showing the event is a complex equation

Grupo Globo’s director of sporting events, Joana Thimoteo, stressed at a media event in Rio that the broadcast of the Paris Olympics is not for profit. According to the director, showing the event is a complex equation, but it is worth it especially because it is an important communication for the broadcaster. The information is published by the F5 website, of Folha de S.Paulo

Joana participated in a panel on sports at Rio2C.

– Olympic sports rights are expensive and commercial fees do not necessarily pay for those rights. So an equation must be made between the acquisition of rights, the shares acquired, the subscriptions which will probably be incentivized with the offering of content and also with production. It’s a complex equation. It’s not just a revenue decision when we decide to organize the Olympics on Globo – said Joana.

Globo understood that it was necessary to change the acquisition model for these events.

– We cannot pretend that everything is fine regarding financial issues in the market, but we have made a very solid decision – the executive said, adding that the broadcaster has positive expectations regarding the audience of the Olympic Games.
