Under international law, Ukraine has the right to attack legitimate military targets in Russia to defend itself, the secretary general of the Western military alliance, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg, said during a visit in Ukraine, a new member of the alliance. Sweden, this Friday.
“Ukraine has the right to self-defense,” Stoltenberg said at a news conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson at a military base near Stockholm.
“The right to self-defense also includes the right to strike legitimate military targets on the territory of the attacker, the aggressor, in this case Russia.”
The Kremlin said this week that Western nations that supply Ukraine with weapons to attack Russian territory will have to settle scores with Russia, after President Vladimir Putin said he is considering arming the West’s enemies as retaliation.
“This is an offensive war that Russia has launched against a peaceful and democratic neighboring country, Ukraine, which has never posed a threat to Russia,” Stoltenberg said.
“There is no doubt that Ukraine has the right to strike targets on Russian territory.”
