The movie that made me dream: Grand Rex, with Schwarzenegger and my father…

In the life of a moviegoer, there are obviously movies that are important. But there are also cinemas that matter. One that has left its mark on me forever is Le Grand Rex, a venerable Parisian establishment on Boulevard Poissonière.

The first time I went to Grand Rex was a few weeks before I turned 15, an age where nothing can impress me. And for the record, you could say I was… When you step out of the metro and are amazed to find the imposing Art Deco facade of this legendary cinema, with its three giant letters overlooking the grand boulevards, it’s magical. One gets the impression that Hollywood has invited itself to Panama.

So here we are in October 1991, and I’m staring at Le Grand Rex with stars in my eyes, amazed that the show has already started. With some trepidation, I humbly approach this impressive landmark-listed building to catch a glimpse of Arnold Schwarzenegger in action in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

If the exterior of the Grand Rex is impressive, then what can we say about its magnificent great room. With its 2,702 seats (including 98 folding seats) spread over 3 levels, orchestral leather seats and a rather magical “Mediterranean antique” decor, I literally take in the view before the movie starts. Even my father, with whom I share this moment, is amazed, the one who has never been to this almost century-old cinema, which opened on December 8, 1932 in the presence of Louis Lumiere.

A projection that takes the big big

But the best is yet to come. The second was installed on the balcony with my father, when we thought we would enjoy it Terminator 2 On the screen at the back of the room, to our surprise, another giant screen hidden in the ceiling came down before our astonished eyes. Called Le Grand Large, it puts viewers very close to the action. Suffice to say, seeing Schwartz in Terminator mode so close to you has the effect of…

I remember well that it was difficult for me to leave the room. Enthralled by James Cameron’s classic, I was equally astounded to discover the Grand Rex and wandered around several times to take in every nook and cranny of this unique movie venue. “I will come back”Then I promised myself.

I have indeed been back to Grand Rex many times since Saturday afternoon in 1981. It’s crazy, but the magic always happens as soon as I look up to see the three letters on the building or when I walk into that legendary room. And every time I get the chance to go there again, I always get goosebumps at the memory of that great movie moment with Arnold and my dad.
