God save the queen ! The legendary group and ambassador of the punk movement, Six Pistols is passing, in turn, not a biographical box. Unlike Bohemian Rhapsody and more recently Elvis, this is not a movie, but a six-episode series that goes back to the birth of these music icons. And who better than Danny Boyle, the British director in the style of Electric, to direct?
Simply titled Pistol, the series is adapted from the memoir of guitarist Steve Jones. It perfectly recreates the atmosphere of that time. The elegance of the costumes and sets is stunning, but it is primarily in the image processing that the filmmaker really manages to bring the seventies to life. He still collaborates with his chief cinematographer, Anthony Dodd Mantle, to bring light and grain to the mix with the many archival images in the edits.
In his youth, Danny Boyle was a fan of punk himself. with pistol, it charms with its memories and movement while rediscovering the themes of old films. As in Trainspotting, pistol Follows the journey of a group of young people on the fringes of society.
However, it faced several obstacles during production. There was Covid, but John Lydon, the band’s singer. Formally opposed to the project, he did everything to prevent the series from seeing the light of day. He criticizes Danny Boyle for turning the band’s history into a fairy tale.
Danny Boyle responds to his criticism guard :”I love Lydon for what he does and I don’t want him to absolutely love the show, I want him to attack it. This is his most absolute right. Why would he change the line of behavior that has marked his life?“
On screen, John Lydon is played by Anson Boone (walk), guitarist Steve Jones Toby Wallace (Milla), drummer Paul Cook, Jacob Slater, bassist Glenn Matlock, Christian Lees, and finally Sid Vicious is played by Lewis Partridge (Enola Holmes). Famous manager Malcolm McLaren is played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and model Jordan is played by Maisie Williams. Two actors in particular appeared in the series Game of Thrones.
