At the end of 2021, with the long-awaited release of the remake of the musical West Side Story, Steven Spielberg finally managed to offer the public his favorite project, which has always been a big fan of him since early childhood. A 1950s musical by Leonard Bernstein and first adapted in 1961 by Robert Wise.

In addition to the two film adaptations, there have been four revivals of the musical on Broadway and numerous regional productions in the United States and abroad in theaters, high school and college audiences, with the addition of a punk rock version. A condensed version in which Sher performed all the roles and even a series of performances at the famous Scala in Milan!

A non-binary actor

Anybodys character is played by Iris Menace, a non-binary actress. The casting director justifies this choice: “We discussed a lot and decided that this role would be best played by a trans person. Iris Menace was auditioning for the dance and when I introduced her to Steven.“

Producer David Saint is sure that Arthur Lorentz, the author of the musical’s libretto, would approve of this decision: “Arthur was ahead of his time in this field. He said, “Anybodys is a character who is a man born in a woman’s body.” What more can I add?“
