Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) will pledge to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels this decade, according to a draft statement to be released at the end of an ongoing summit in Italy.
“We will transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems in a fair, orderly and equitable manner, accelerating action in this critical decade, to achieve net zero by 2050, in accordance with the best available science,” says the draft seen by Reuters .
Other climate policy commitments in the draft include a promise to “phase out coal-fired electricity generation from our energy systems during the first half of the 2030s.”
