Diniz recognizes the team’s negative phase: “We don’t give results”

Coach Fernando Diniz held a press conference after the 2-1 defeat against Atlético-GO.

Coach Fernando Diniz held a press conference after the 2-1 defeat against Atlético-GO. With nine games, one win and five defeats, the Tricolor definitively entered the relegation zone and the fans protested with boos after another setback. The coach commented on this fact.

— If the fans curse me and boo the team from start to finish, they are right. We haven’t given them what they deserve. Fluminense fans need more. I’m frustrated that they haven’t delivered what they deserve. I feel enormous affection for them and I know what they need. I know what I’m doing. Our way of playing is being questioned because we are getting bad results.

Even the fans were impatient with the style of play adopted by the Tricolor. Touching the ball, sometimes unproductive, has become a negative factor in Fluminense’s matches. Diniz analyzed this problem:

— The game system is current from 2022. It’s not current, it’s what we play. There are other elements going on. We are learning to live with what we achieved last year. In Libertadores this year we won the cup. At the moment the team is very down. We must work on all fronts to regain our position, the best way to face this moment is to regain confidence through training and matches – said Diniz, who also explained the team’s performance during the match:

— We played a terrible game in creation. He was confidently defensive. In the first half we didn’t concede anything. The main reason is the loss of confidence the team has due to the negative results. Everyone tried to do it well and technically we got a lot of things wrong that the team usually doesn’t get wrong. And if we miss a lot of passes, the team is unable to create a scoring situation. We are already working on this so that the players have a little more confidence to be able to overcome this moment. The thing I trust the most is the team’s ability to come together and do difficult things.

Finally, the coach commented on the confusion that arose after Felipe Melo pushed the Atlético-GO press officer while celebrating the goal scored in the last minute.

— Felipe is a guy with whom I have a positive relationship. He tries to defend the club. I didn’t see the move. If he had done something wrong it could have happened, but he is a boy who wears the Fluminense shirt body and soul. He is knowing how to get his head straight. It is normal to have distrust when a negative result arrives, when the fans are not satisfied they start to boo. It’s a growth opportunity for people and teams and we’re working to make it happen.

Now Fluminense is preparing to face Cruzeiro away from home next Wednesday (19th), at 9.30pm, in the tenth round of the Brasileirão.
