‘House of the Dragon 2’: New series introduction explained (shows Targaryens history)

With the second season of ‘House of the Dragon’, a new intro was also released, which in addition to showing the opening credits, chronicles the history of the most powerful houses in Westeros. Here we explain it in detail.

From the first seconds of the new episode, viewers are transported to a world where the art of embroidery becomes a narrative vehicle. The carefully designed ’embellishments’ depict central scenes and moments of Targaryen family history, providing a visual summary that may be unfamiliar to many.

The new opening sequence of ‘House of the Dragon 2’ reveals the history of the Targaryens

Conquest of Valyria

The story begins with the fall of Valyria, the ancient and powerful city that served as the home of the Targaryens. This cataclysmic event, known as the Curse of Valyria, is represented by dark and reddish threads that symbolize fire and destruction, not to mention dragons and fire, central to his identity and power.

Aegon the conqueror and his sisters

Later, the embroidery depicts the migration of the Targaryens to Westeros, highlighting the conquest of Aegon I and his sisters, Rhaenys and Visenya, along with their respective dragons, considered among the most powerful according to the story.

The attack on Harrenhall

In one scene you can see how the threads form an embroidery that highlights a burning castle, dead men around it and a huge red stain that reflects the carnage. This represents Aegon the Conqueror’s burning of Harrenhal, one of the greatest buildings in the Seven Kingdoms, to show his power.

Torrhen Stark surrenders to Aegon

Soon, three people from different houses appear to make a kind of bow, and the one in the middle is Torrhen Stark, who has decided to surrender and swear allegiance to Aegon the Conqueror so that his men will not die from dragon fire .

The death of King Maegor

Maegor the Cruel was the son of King Aegon I and his sister Visenya. When he ascended to power, a few years later his throat was pierced by one of the Iron Throne’s swords, as if it rejected him.

King Jaehaerys I and Alysanne Targaryen

The image below is probably of King Jaehaerys I the Conciliator and his sister and wife, Queen Alysanne. This royal couple had a largely harmonious marriage and ruled during an extended period of peace in Westeros, a time often referred to as a golden age for the Targaryens.

Great Council Tent

The opening scene of the first season, where King Jaehaerys names Viserys I Targaryen as his successor, is also part of the Targaryen tapestry. This event marks the entire kingdom and Aemma Arryn, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen and her husband Lord Corlys Velaryon also appear.

Alicent Hightower and the separation of the Targaryens

After her marriage to Viserys I Targaryen, Alicent became part of Targaryen history and the embroidery reflects how her rivalry with Rhaenyra split the family, forming the Green and Black sides.

Aegon II and Rhaenyra Targaryen as kings

In the next scene, King Aegon II Targaryen is crowned and seated on the Iron Throne, and his rival and claimant to the throne, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, who is his older half-sister, is also shown seated on the throne.

Death of Lucerys Velaryon

The last scene of the new intro shows for a few seconds the death of Prince Lucerys Velaryon and his dragon Arrax, at the hands of Prince Aemond Targaryen and his dragon Vhagar, i.e. the beginning of the “Dance of Dragons”.
