Pope Francis renewed this Wednesday (19th), during the general audience in the Vatican, his appeal for peace in the wars that have broken out in the world, including the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
In front of the thousands of faithful present in St. Peter’s Square, the Pontiff asked everyone to continue to “pray for peace”, because “war is always a defeat from the start”.
“We pray for peace in the tormented Ukraine, in the Holy Land, in Sudan, in Myanmar and in all the places that suffer from war” the Argentine launched an appeal. “We pray every day for peace.”
In the homily, Francis dedicated his catechesis to the prayer of the Psalms and confided that he had on his table a “Ukrainian edition of the New Testament and the Psalms, by a soldier killed in war”, which they sent him after the citizen had used the book for praying on the front lines of the conflict.
According to him, prayer with the psalms opens avenues of happiness in different situations of life. “There are many psalms that help us move forward. Get used to praying with the psalms, I assure you that in the end you will be happy”, he encouraged.
For the leader of the Catholic Church, “the Psalms do not belong to the past, they become current when we make them our prayer”.
“I advise you that when a psalm, or a verse of a psalm, touches your heart, cherish it and repeat it throughout the day. For each of the situations we will experience in life, we will always find a psalm that will give us an answer.”
The Pope argued that the use of the Psalms enriches prayer, overcoming the temptation to reduce it to “requests”.
During the celebration, Jorge Bergoglio also remembered “the dear Chinese people” and asked to pray “always for this noble, courageous people, who have such a beautiful culture”.
Finally, he recalled that this Thursday is the “‘World Refugee Day’ promoted by the United Nations” and hoped that “it will be an opportunity to turn an attentive and fraternal gaze to all those who are forced to flee from their homes in seeks peace and security.”
“We are all called to welcome, promote, accompany and integrate those who knock on our doors. I pray that States work to guarantee humane conditions for refugees and facilitate integration processes,” she concluded. .
